Careers at Red Five Labs
(updated 1 April 2009)
The team at Red Five Labs is as diverse as the wide spectrum of software development and technology skill sets that we require to build our products. Thus, we are looking for a variety of skill sets and disciplines. Red Five Labs is in a growth phase and exciting opportunities for employment are readily available.
The Positions Available
At present we have three positions available:
1. Release Engineer
Red Five Labs conducts thorough internal testing. We employ daily, automated Unit Tests on the entire code base. We have a rigourous framework deployment testing regimen. We conduct extensive on device and user testing. For all of the aforementioned, we require a suitably qualified test engineer to join our Quality Assurance team to build and maintain our internal infrastructure. Previous software testing and development experience is essential.
2. Symbian C++ / C++ Developer
The Red Five Labs runtime (CLR) is designed from the ground up for Symbian OS and written in the Symbian dialect of C++. We're looking for smart people, preferably with embedded device experience, to work both on the runtime itself as well as associated tools (debuggers, remote tracing).
3. .NET Developer (C#)
The Class Libraries of the .NET Compact Framework are mostly written in the C# programming language. As we expand our capacity to address the ever evolving functionality provided by the class libraries we are looking for a .NET developer (preferably with C# experience) who is very comfortable with building and expanding the full gamut of the namespaces provided in the .NET class libraries. The ideal candidate will also have experience in developing mobile applications using the .NET Compact Framework for resource constrained mobile phones / devices.
The Process
Our hiring process is simple. If you would like to explore the opportunity to work with us in any of the above mentioned roles, please submit your CV to our careers@redfivelabs.com address. Your application will be treated with the strictest confidence and highest priority by our team leads. Hopefully you match our criteria in which case we will then invite you in to our offices for a broad panel interview where you get to meet the Red Five Labs team and get a feel for our culture and technology. If we like you (and assuming you like us) the next step is a technical review. Such a session could take the form of white boarding code, problem solving tests and general think on your feet evaluations. The final step is a panel interview with a member of our Board of Directors and the founders.
Spam: We guarantee that we respond to every email received. If you do not receive a response from us, please resend your application.
The Deal
Red Five Labs is not your typical employer. We are however, aggressively entrepreneurial in composition. Consequently, our employment packages are geared to encourage hard work, self development and large rewards. You are welcome to ask us more about this in your first panel interview.
Disclaimer
Although, in the above positions, we have asked for the ideal candidate with experience we are madly hungry for raw talent and intellect. We also support vacation work or internships.
Winter / Summer Code Camps
Red Five Labs runs both a winter and summer code camp every year. We hire a handful of top students and put them together as a team on challenging projects. Those lucky enough to be selected enjoy a great working environment and excellent industry experience.
Students interested in participating in our code camp in Winter 2009 should submit their CVs and transcripts by no later than 1 June 2009.

"I spent two months at Red Five Labs and it was a valuable experience. I was exposed to challenging and interesting work, learnt a variety of skills and met some great people.
The environment is relaxed but focused. The team is friendly and eager to help. I found the work challenging. The idea of vacation work is to learn and be exposed to new things and this certainly happened. I have acquired some Symbian C++ and .NET skills.
I would recommend the company as a place for vacation work. A willing-to-learn attitude is required. A taste for coffee and Chinese food helps. You will be able to take away a new set of skills and the realisation that working for the rest of your life doesn't have to be such a bad proposition."

"My time spent at Red Five Labs was highly beneficial. The staff were always willing to answer my questions and provide guidance when I asked for help. The managerial style employed at Red Five Labs fosters ingenuity and expects a certain level of initiative.
The working environment at Red Five Labs is an open and relaxed one that helped me feel comfortable and allowed me to work freely, though results are expected. The resources needed were always available; leaving you to find solutions to your tasks as needed.
I would recommend Red Five Labs because I gained greatly beneficial knowledge there, while enjoying the experience."
